Britains first WiFi streetlight project unveiled in Milton Keynes

22nd December 2016

The UK’s first Wi-Fi-enabled exterior lighting installation has been unveiled in Milton Keynes.

In what engineers are describing as a ‘proof of concept’, the interactive streetlight outside the football ground on MK Dons FC also includes 360-degree LED lighting, CCTV and a remote-controlled public address system.

The CCTV system and PA speaker – for match day announcements – are both connected to the MK Dons control room to allow instant access and remote control.

The modular nature of the Schréder Shuffle also ensures the installation is future proofed as the luminaire can be upgraded at any point to include additional functionality such as mobile device charging and specialist advertising features.

Development of Stadium MK and Arena MK was led by Pete Winkelman and his company Inter MK Group.  Winkelman is also the chairman of MK Dons FC and continues to drive development of the ‘MK One’ site around the stadium.

Winkelman told Lux: ‘The Shuffle looks great and it replaces the need for multiple independent lighting, CCTV and Wi-Fi columns.’

Adam Rice, marketing manager at Schréder comments: ‘The Shuffle offers visitors to Stadium MK multiple connected services integrated in a single lighting column.  As well as removing the need to create separate solutions, it presents a more modern and iconic face to the MK Dons Box Office and Superstore.’

The Shuffle can be upgraded at any point to include additional functionality such as mobile device charging and specialist advertising features.

The installation is being seen as a symbolic start to the 'Smart City' movement, in which street and exterior lighting installations become the backbone of a network in which digital and other services are delivered in urban environments. It's also significant in that Schréder, an established lighting brand, is supplying the equipment rather than a telecoms giant.
